This song is inspired by an article on
Stuff.co.nz about the distribution of wealth in New Zealand:
www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/10416461/Wealth-split-worse-than-most-realise
The article by Rob Stock looks at research conducted by Peter Skilling at AUT. He surveyed Kiwis about the distribution of wealth, and while many knew about the gap between the rich and the poor, people grossly underestimated just how unequal it is.
The reality is this: 70% of New Zealand's wealth is held by the richest 20% of the population.
The bottom of 20% own nothing, and the second poorest 20% own 2%. Total that up, and we see that the poorest 40% of New Zealanders own 2% of the country's wealth.
Its a modern-day feudal economy.
I tie this in with asset sales, because for me, asset sales add to this feeling of disenfranchisement. Making tons of money is less important if you own joint assets, such as energy production and natural resources.
