This song is inspired by an article on Stuff.co.nz about the distribution of wealth in New Zealand:

www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/10416461/Wealth-split-worse-than-most-realise

The article by Rob Stock looks at research conducted by Peter Skilling at AUT. He surveyed Kiwis about the distribution of wealth, and while many knew about the gap between the rich and the poor, people grossly underestimated just how unequal it is.

The reality is this: 70% of New Zealand's wealth is held by the richest 20% of the population.

The bottom of 20% own nothing, and the second poorest 20% own 2%. Total that up, and we see that the poorest 40% of New Zealanders own 2% of the country's wealth.

Its a modern-day feudal economy.

I tie this in with asset sales, because for me, asset sales add to this feeling of disenfranchisement. Making tons of money is less important if you own joint assets, such as energy production and natural resources.

Thanks for reading.... xx k

Lyrics-------------------------------------------------------------------------

its a modern day feudal economy
Here in middle earth, with a chardonnay
We work long hours for very little pay
And when it comes to our assets
We give it away

The Nats are using American tactics
PR companies and illegal rackets`
Its hard to stop what we can’t see
From the board rooms to the bloggers to the MPs.

70 percent
70 percent
70 percent is owned by 20

We’re for sale
Our rivers for sale
Our trees for sale
Mining rights for sale

So if this aint your cup of tea
Ask yourself the way you want to be
Tell your friends what you want to see
Step into the voting booth and fuck john key

So fuck your craft beers and your wine and your cheese
We’re giving away our factories
We’re giving way our water and trees
We’re a bargain basement country

70 percent
70 percent
70 percent is owned by 20

We’re for sale
